The pine processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is a caterpillar that lives in colonies inside white silk nests visible on the branches of pine trees. Its urticating hairs are highly irritating to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes — especially dangerous for children and dogs.
In Mallorca its active cycle runs from September to April. The larvae descend from the tree in a procession to bury themselves in the ground and complete their metamorphosis. That is when the risk of contact is highest.
