Pruning at the wrong moment can stress the tree, reduce its flowering or open wounds during periods of high pathogen activity. In Mallorca, the Mediterranean climate has specific characteristics that need to be taken into account. This guide sets out the recommended times for the species most commonly found in the island's gardens.
Pines (Pinus): autumn or winter
Pines in Mallorca are best pruned in autumn or winter, when they are least active. Spring is the period of maximum resin production and of greatest activity from bark beetles, so pruning is best avoided during that season. If there is an urgent need due to the risk of falling branches, they can be pruned at any time of year, but ideally outside spring.
Olive trees: late winter or spring
The olive tree is pruned once the risk of frost has passed but before it puts on strong new growth. In Mallorca, that usually falls between February and April. Pruning an olive tree has a twofold aim: to maintain its shape and to encourage production if the tree is a fruiting one. On ornamental olive trees the pruning is more aesthetic and can be somewhat more flexible in its timing.
Palms: all year round, with some caveats
Palms can be pruned throughout the year in Mallorca. However, it is worth bearing in mind that pruning in spring and summer, when the adult red palm weevil is most active, can attract the insect to the fresh wounds left by pruning. For this reason, in areas with a high incidence of the weevil, we recommend combining pruning with a preventive endotherapy treatment.
Almond trees: after flowering
The almond tree flowers in January and February in Mallorca, one of the first trees to do so. Almond trees are pruned after flowering and before the tree is in full vegetative growth. Poorly timed pruning can remove the blossom before it sets or interrupt the fruiting process.
Hedges and flowering shrubs: after flowering
For shrubs that flower in spring (bougainvillea, oleander, roses), the general rule is to prune after flowering. Pruning beforehand removes the buds and reduces that season's flowering. For hedges that do not flower, or whose flowering is secondary, pruning can be done in spring or early summer to keep growth in check.
Cypresses: spring or late summer
Cypresses are best pruned either in spring, before intense growth begins, or in late summer when growth slows down. Pruning in the height of summer can leave visible scars because of the heat. Formative pruning of young cypresses is especially important for achieving the desired outline.

See garden maintenanceGeneral rule: prune during dormancy
For most trees, the general rule is to prune during dormancy — late autumn or winter — when the tree has lost or reduced its activity. Pruning wounds heal better, there is less risk of fungal infection and the tree recovers its energy before the growing season.
There are exceptions — palms, cypresses, some fruit trees — but as a starting point, if you are unsure when to prune a tree in your garden, winter is usually a safe choice. If you would like a specific assessment for the species in your garden, our site visit is free and without obligation.
